Arjan Jongsma releases “New Perspectives for Marimba”

Aliud Records is proud to present “New Perspectives for Marimba” by Dutch based percussionist Arjan Jongsma. Featuring works by J.S. Bach, M. Ravel and the world premiere recording of Sipke Hoekstra’s “Clio’s Patchwork, Fantasia for Marimba”, Jongsma takes a pianistic approach, truly opening up new perspectives for the Marimba.

The Album, includes a single stereo CD and a Blu-ray disc in Auro 3D providing the listener with a unique 3D, Immersive Sound, listening experience. In addition the album also features high quality packaging, extensive liner notes and additional downloadable content. Along with the solo Marimba performances, Jongsma is joined by the chamber music group the “Colori Ensemble” for his adaptation for marimba, flute, oboe, cello and piano of Ravel’s “Concerto for the Left Hand in D major”.

Professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and the Conservatorium in Amsterdam, Peter Prommel, wrote in his foreword to the liner notes “By listening to this recording, it will become obvious that it is the start of a new era of interpretation of great pieces on the marimba. At the same time, new pieces by composers with a keen ear for phrasing and colouring are seductive to the ear and display the beauty of the wood that the marimba player touches.”

The album includes two works from Johann Sebastian Bach, the Lute Suite in E minor (BWV 996) and the Prelude from the English Suite No. 2 in A minor, (BWV 807). The Lute Suite was originally written for an instrument called the “Lautenwerck”. While no original specimen of this instrument has survived, it was one of Bach’s favourite keyboard instruments and at the time of his death, he owned two of them. Similar to a harpsichord, but with gut rather than metal strings the instrument produces a mellow tone far closer to that of a lute. The marimba is extremely well suited to reproduce this warm and delicate sound that Bach presumably had in mind. Please, pay special attention to the warmth and depth of sound in the low registers, that corresponds so wonderfully with the aspects we value in the sound of the lute.

Jongsma first explored the music of Ravel while studying for his masters degree at the Conservation in Amsterdam. “I discovered that the typical sound of marimba seems to fit the impressionistic world of Ravel perfectly” said Jongsma. He went on to say that this was the main reason “to try out some of his works for piano solo on the marimba, which resulted in playing Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn and Sonatine. Almost no changes to the score were needed to be able to play those pieces, apart from some chords that I had to reduce to four voices.”

One of the major pieces presented on this album is Ravel’s “Concerto for the Left Hand in D major”. When speaking of the choice to adapt this piece Arjan explained “Obviously, when diving into Ravel’s oeuvre, the Concerto for the Left Hand in D major is a masterwork not to be missed. One of my general goals is to show as many colours as possible on the marimba. To be able to do that, we need pieces that give us those possibilities and I found out the Concerto for the Left Hand would push me to extend this range of colours even more, varying from beautifully fluent, legato lines in the final cadence, short militaristic notes in the allegro, to powerful, heavy statements in the first cadence. In the adaptation we made for marimba solo, flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, cello and piano, we tried to recreate the orchestral sound in a chamber music setting. One big advantage of this setting is that, as a marimba player, one can make use of the full dynamic range of the instrument without having to push its limits, since it is easier to balance with a small ensemble.”

Looking for a bridge between the polyphonic works of Bach and the impressionism of Ravel, Jongsma commissioned a new work from Dutch composer Sipke Hoekstra. The result, “Clio’s Patchwork, Fantasia for Marimba”, fits perfectly in this role. Arjan stated “Clio’s Patchwork is a great addition to the marimba repertoire. Together with the adaptations of the music by Bach and Ravel, to me it perfectly represents the concept of this cd: offering new perspectives for marimba.”

The Album is due for worldwide release on the 4th of July 2021 and is available as a stereo CD and includes a Blu-ray disc with the program presented in Auro 3d, immersive sound. Auro 3d provides the listener with a three-dimensional, immersive sound, realistic sound experience unlike anything before. Thanks to a unique ‘Height’ channel configuration, acoustic reflections are generated and heard naturally due to the fact that sounds originate from around as well as above the listener.

Ill Concerto Barocco

Literally translated, Ill Concerto Barocco means “the baroque concert”. This name was chosen as it best describes what this ensemble is about. Ill Concerto Barocco is an ensemble accommodating a wide range of instrumentations ranging from small chamber music settings to full baroque orchestra. The basic principle of the ensembles performances is that the music performed is best served by the instrumentation and performances practices developed and used in the period that the music was conceived.

Founded in 2002 by bassist and artistic director Andrew Read, Ill Concerto Barocco has become one of the most successful Baroque Orchestras in the Netherlands. The orchestra has performed throughout the Netherlands and Germany and welcomed many of the early music worlds most respected soloists and vocal ensembles. In addition the ensemble presents a regular series of concerts in their home concert venue the Waterstaatskerk in Hengelo, the Netherlands.

As mentioned above, the orchestra specializes in the performance of music from the 17th centaury with a focus on repertoire from lessor know composers from the period. This can be evidenced by the unique recordings of the music from composers such as Henry DuMont, Carolus Hacquart and the World premiere recordings of two works from Johann Heinrich Schmelzer available on Aliud Records (Sepolcro ACD HN 017-2). Next to the endless search for unique repertoire, Ill Concerto Barocco has also focused their attention on more standard repertoire such as the Ouverture Suites from Telemann (ACD-HA-009-2) and the highly praised recording of G.F. Handel’s Concerti Grossi opus 3 ( ACD-HJ-039-2).

Jos Boerland Interview, AURO-3D Immersive Sound!

Recently, Jos Boerland, Owner and founder of Aliud Records, was invited by the team at AURO-3D to to sit down and discuss the label’s activities in light of our 15th anniversary and the introduction of AURO-3D into the label’s catalog. Jos also speaks in some detail about the the World Premiere recording of the orchestral version of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato. Here’s a snippet of the interview below:

“Jos Boerland owner of Aliud Records, a classical record label founded in 2005 sat down with us to discuss celebrating 15 years of his label with the World Premiere recording of Canto Ostinato, three unique orchestral recordings from the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt performed by the Dutch Noord Nederlands Orkest. Jos, is a born musician, having studied percussion at the Conservatory of Groningen, The Netherlands. At just 17 he started his own recording studio, then going on to work in mastering before becoming involved in the publishing side of the industry, as well as having recorded and produced over 2500 albums himself.

“Enjoying music is more then just listening to it. Music enchants you, it is inspiring and is a way to communicate emotions as no other sense can. Lets take the chance to experience this in the best way possible, AURO-3D.”

1) How did you come to start Aliud Records and what was the mission behind the label?

2005 was the year I changed things in my life and reignited the label “Aliud Records” which I used to have before working with The Haske Publications. With all the experience I had in classical, Jazz and Brass music the label became quickly well known and I am happy to say we have been going now for 15 years!

Aliud Records is mainly a classical label in High Resolution Audio, innovating in sound quality, recording techniques, music styles and compositions and innovative ways to bring music to the consumer in the best way possible to give the consumer the excitement of “experiencing” music. So when I heard at the first “Classical Next” in Munich about 2-2-2+ listening possibilities and later on in 2008 experienced at the Galaxy studios about 3D Audio I knew this had to be the next generation in experiencing music! French Oboe Sonatas (2008) was the first album I recorded in 3D Audio, nowadays called “Immersive Sound”, and since then I recorded all albums for Aliud Records this way. Now more than 100 albums to date.

When I started recording in Immersive Sound in 2008 I decided to make them available in Immersive Sound and to re-release them in AURO-3D. I don’t think consumers nowadays want only the physical product. Downloads and streaming are increasingly popular and useful at home and I think it will be the way to get your music easily and comfortably the moment you want it. As listeners are choosing the music they want to listen to in new ways from what we are used to it gives artists new possibilities; more freedom in programming, more variety in the listening experience. An opportunity for young composers to experiment, communicating more directly and composing with the listener in mind. This makes it possible to create a much more interactive and creative experience for the listener and the composition, the musical idea itself. Composing music will not be the same again. I am very much looking forward to experiencing the AURO-3D streaming technology which will bring this experience to home over IP in the same audio quality as we are used to hear from a Blu-ray or Pure Audio Blu-ray disc.

2) Tell us about your new album – Canto Ostinato –recently released in AURO-3D

As I do many recordings for the “Noord Nederlands Orkest” I recorded 3 pieces by the Dutch contemporary classical composer Simeon ten Holt. One of his best known pieces called Canto Ostinato has been orchestrated by Anthony Fiumara for the Dutch orchestra the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague and for the first time recorded by the Noord Nederlands Orkest! Three very special pieces as a world premiere recording in a live setting and now available to experience as if you are in the concert hall itself! Innovative music recorded in a special way and now available in AURO-3D. How much innovation in music do you need. Listening to this music in AURO-3D is an innovation itself! Have a listen to “Une Musique Blanche for orchestra”, with several orchestras all around in the concert hall on several height levels will give you the ultimate experience of being part of the thoughts of the composer.

3) When did you decide to release this album in AURO-3D?

As the first recordings of this album were already made in 2014 I had no idea in releasing in Immersive sound in any way because there was simply no market for it and even in 2016 when I recorded “Une Musique Blanche for orchestra” in 3D Audio the idea was still to make an SACD. Finally recording the Canto Ostinato in 2017 I was sure this had to be different. So finally in 2020 I decided to bring the album with music by Simeon ten Holt in Immersive Sound based on the AURO-3D platform which I already knew since 2008! To me the best sounding and most easy to use platform available, AURO-3D.

4) Have you already released any other albums in AURO-3D? Any upcoming AURO-3D releases planned that you can tell us about?

There are many plans for next year and after to make new albums. Next year there will be a third album by the young Colori Ensemble in conjunction with the Frisian Music Archive, A Bach album on marimba played by the very talented young musician Arjan Jongsma, a vocal album by the Trigon Ensemble, Margot Kalse, a clarinet album by Eddy Vanoosthuyse, Joris Van den Hauwe will come with a very special album on Oboe and the Brussels Philharmonic, an album with Isobel Daws winner of the SwissTbone competition for young trombone players and many more.

5) Where can people buy all your albums?

Our albums are of course available in your local record store or at many e-commerce sites such as amazon etc. download and streaming platforms and of course on our own web-shop.

6) Do you want to share anything else with our readers?

Enjoying music is more then just listening to it. Music enchants you, it is inspiring and is a way to communicate emotions as no other sense can. Lets take the chance to experience this in the best way possible, AURO-3D.

NNO releases Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato

We’re proud to announce that on November 6th that we will release the World Première recording of three unique orchestral works from Simeon Ten Holt, one of the Netherlands most iconic 20th century composers. The release includes the first recording of Anthony Fiumara’s orchestration for Symphony Orchestra of Ten Holt’s seminal work “Canto Ostinato” along with two additional works by the composer, that for unknown reasons prior to this recording, had never been previously performed.

In addition to the unique repertoire we are also thrilled to present the music on CD as well as Blu-ray Disc where the entire program both is available in Auro 3d and Dolby Atmos, providing the listener with a unique 3D, Immersive Sound listening experience.

The three works included on the album are performed by the Dutch Noord Nederlands Orkest, conducted by David Porcelijn and were recorded live in concert at the Oosterport in Groningen, the orchestra’s home concert hall.

The title piece “Canto Ostinato” is, without doubt, Ten Holts signature composition and garnered the composer international recognition. This work is often seen as belonging to the minimal-music genre and Ten Holt of described the works structural progression as akin to the development of a genetic code. The work was created as more than one hundred individual short sections each lasting a few bars and in the key of Bb Minor. Eventually composer Andries Hubers organized these sections to a single score. After this Ten Holt rearranged the score a number of times leading to the fact that a number of different versions of the work exist.

In 2016, composer, Anthony Fiumara orchestrated the work for the Dutch Residentie Orkest based in the Hague. Fiumara stated: “Translating this work, originally for 4 pianos, to a full symphony orchestra is akin to translating a table conversation for 60 people.”. In other words, “It is as if Canto Ostinato can now be heard in colour.” Fiumara’s orchestration of Canto Ostinato was premièred in concert by Otto Tausk and the Residentie Orkest however, this performance recorded in 2017 by the Noord Nederlands Orkest is the first time this version on Canto Ostinato has appeared on CD.

The other two works presented on the album, “Une Musique Blanche” and “Centrifuga” were composed as part of a commission by the Dutch Ministry of Culture. Both pieces were intended to form part of a trilogy however a third piece never materialized and the two compositions, until this performance, had never been performed.

“Une musique blanche” is a twenty minute long composition Ten Holt worked with electronic music specialist (Sonologist) Stan Tempelaars. The piece consists of two string groups interacting with four orchestral groups, each with their own specific sound-scape. The third piece titled “Centrifuga” rounds out the program. Ten Holt provided a short explanation of the piece: “Centrifuga” is based simply on the use of four tones. These tones, used in varying order, form the basis for four groups that eventually form a phrase. This phrase, in it’s horizontal form is also mirrored in the vertical. To realize this in the acoustic world ten Holt worked with groups of four instruments (four flutes, four Oboe’s, four Horns etc).

The Album is due for worldwide release on the 6th of November 2020. The physical album includes a Double CD, a Blu-ray disc with the program presented in Auro 3d and Dolby Atmos and extensive liner notes. In addition the Blu-ray disc is also configured for mShuttle allowing the listener to be able to stream the music on any device connected to their home audio network.

Both Auro 3d and Dolby Atmos provide the listener with a three-dimensional realistic sound experience unlike anything before. Thanks to a unique ‘Height’ channel configuration, acoustic reflections are generated and heard naturally due to the fact that sounds originate from around as well as above the listener.

Colori Ensemble release new album “Evasio”

The title of this CD reflects the mission of the Colori Ensemble. To evade, the literal translation of the Latin evasio, is symbol to the ensemble’s wish to escape daily musical routine and to elude the beaten track. To throw new light on the existing, but also to create new sounds by playing new compositions by contemporary composers. To emphasize that these composers stand on the shoulders of illustrious predecessors, this CD is combining these new compositions with arrangements of well-known repertoire by composers whose works have withstood the test of time already.

The chosen compositions are fitted to the specific musical cast of the Colori Ensemble. The result can be compared to add subtle colouring to a black-and-white photograph, revealing details that might be overlooked, or in this case overheard, in the original. The four contemporary composers on this CD, all originating from or working in the Dutch province of Friesland, each in their own way stand on the shoulders of the great composers from the past: sometimes reminiscent, but at the same time looking toward a bright musical future. The musicians consider the posthumous contribution of the Frisian poet Tsjêbbe Hettinga as an inspiring gift. So it is no coincidence that this poet has the first and final word on this CD. Starting from distant shores (Frjemde Kusten), the Colori Ensemble depicts an imaginary and musical journey, escaping from (un)known places and presenting different views. Upon arrival (Oankomst) the cycle is completed by the poet’s welcoming words Kalispera file (greetings to you, my friend).
