Vocal Ensemble Cantatrix

Started in 1992 as a band of twelve friends, selected and conducted by Eeuwe Zijlstra, Cantatrix has in its fifteen year history grown into a mature chamber choir, professionally performing in various concert series every year. In all those years the typical sound of the choir has remained unchanged. The secret of the choir: the combination of high level individual singing qualities with the team spirit and chemistry of the group. This transforms the choir into something special, making every Cantatrix concert an inspired listening experience.

In 2000 Cantatrix was asked to take the place of an English choir in Ripon Cathedral. This trip was a great success and the choir has been travelling ever since. In 2001 Cantatrix sang concerts in the German town of Laage. In 2004 the choir was selected to take part in an international competition in Arezzo in Italy, where the singers took third prize in the ‘straordinario’ category. In the same year, Cantatrix performed in Fulda (Germany) and Crediton (England). In 2005 the ensemble was again selected to participate in the Arezzo festival and this time managed to capture the first prize in the ‘straordinario’ category. In 2007 Cantatrix was asked to sing in the ‘Florilège vocal’ in the French city of Tours, where it won first prize in the ‘renaissance’ category. The year 2008 saw Cantatrix performing in the successful Frisian Requiem ‘Opus Exit’.

Niels Bijl

Niels’ love for the tenor saxophone began as a 12-year-old under the inspiring tutorship of Willy van Diepen in Haaksbergen. During the early years Niels was mostly active in Big Bands and Blues and Jazz bands (including founder of the blues band Cuban Heels), but later at the Conservatorium in Enschede his knowledge of classical and contemporary music was perfected under the supervision of Arno Bornkamp and Johan van der Linden. Currently Niels works as saxophonist on regular productions with symphony orchestras (including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Anima Eterna, World Orchestra for Peace) but his passion lies in Chamber Music, collaborating with among others: the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, pianists Hans-Erik Dijkstra, Rob Horsting, harpist Maaike Bosscher and recorder player Ronald Moelker. His most important motivations are a quest for innovation, quality and passion in music. He shares this passion with young saxophonists through giving master classes around the world and, closer to home, his activities at the music school in Hengelo.

Joris Van den Hauwe

Known for his musicality, his impeccable technique and his distinctive tone and phrasing, Joris Van den Hauwe has become one of the most important ambassadors of the Flemish oboe school. While a student at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, he won first prizes for oboe, chamber music, harmony and counterpoint. He was further awarded a higher diploma in oboe, granted with the highest distinction, while under the tutelage of Paul Dombrecht. In 1983 he was invited to play in the European Union Youth Orchestra, conducted by Claudio Abbado. That was the beginning of a long line of international solo performances. In 2005, Joris van den Hauwe was appointed solo oboist in the Flemish Radio Orchestra, which was later renamed the Brussels Philharmonic.
